Cel U Lar Device
Canzone:

Cel U Lar Device

Cantante:  Erykah Badu
Descrizione:

Surprise! R&B singer and neo-soul originator Erykah Badu came out with a cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling” on October 1, 2015.

After releasing a free mixtape in July 2015 consisting of “carefully and lovingly selected high frequency tones for the soul.”, Erykah released the Zach Witness-produced “Hotline Bling” (later retitled “Cel U Lar Device”) as the lead single from her mixtape/concept album But U Caint Use My Phone.

The song consists of 3 parts: the verse & chorus of “Hotline Bling,” a comedic voicemail skit by Erykah, and a reworked groove where Erykah re-interprets the verse and freestyles over it.

For the commercial release of “Cell U Lar Device,” the third part was edited down by about one-minute, cutting out a repeated verse and chorus, as well as an incidental sample of Outkast’s “Ms. Jackson.”

Testi:

Hook
You used to call me on my cellular device at night
You used to call me on my cellular device at night
And I know when that hotline bling, that could only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling, that could only mean one thing

Verse 1
Ever since I left the city you
Got a reputation for yourself now
Everybody knows and I feel left out
Boy, you got me down, and got me stressed out
Cause ever since I left the city, you
Started gettin' dressed and goin' out more
Glasses of champagne out on the dance floor
Hangin' with some dudes I've never seen before

Hook
You used to call me on my cellular device at night
You used to call me on my cellular device at night
And I know when that hotline bling, that could only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling, that could only mean one thing
(Two one four, witness!)

Verse 2
Some people just said let it go
And on and on and such and such
But they don't ride around with us
No, no, no
Ain't that too bad we love to hang
And for a while, it stays the same
But now you tryna change the game
No, no, no

Hook
You used to call me on my cellular device at night
You used to call me on my cellular device at night
And I know when that hotline bling, that could only mean one thing
I know when that hotline bling, that could only mean one thing

Bridge
Late night when you need my love
Late night when you need my love
Late night when you need my love
Late night when you need my love

But You Caint Use My Phone
Album:

But You Caint Use My Phone

Descrizione:

Released over Thanksgiving 2015, But You Caint Use My Phone is Erykah Badu’s first Mixtape, and follows a five-year hiatus during which she had promised a follow up concept project to New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh) that never surfaced.

Drake’s “Hotline Bling” serves as both the project’s musical backdrop and inspiration as Erykah expressed in an interview with Pitchfork:

It was Drake’s song that helped me reboot the music hard drive inside of me. Once I embodied that, I was off and running because I knew how to use the frequencies to fit my tastes, and I was able to manipulate Ableton and sound effects and voice boxes and all these things. I’ve always tampered with that, but not to this extent.

Recorded over 11 days in with Zach Witness as the primary producer in his Dallas bedroom studio, the tape takes influence from hip hop, R&B, jazz, and art rock, in what Erykah describes as “TRap & B.” While the lyrics convey that cellular devices are taking over not only lives, but intimate relationships.

Longtime lover André 3000 and Soundcloud rapper ItsRoutine, whose voice and lyrics were mistaken for Drake’s, are the only two features.
